Portfolio, Luminescent Sculptures

This page features sculptures made using paper, reed, wood, glue, and twine.  Many are backlit with fluorescent or LED lighting.  (Incandescent or halogen lighting produce too much heat for these structures.) They are protected with an acrylic spray fixative and are quite durable.

These pieces have been produced over the past four years. You can see the flexibility and adaptability of this medium in these images.  Some of these pieces are over six feet high!  Additionally, they are all very light in weight.  The heaviest piece probably weighs five pounds, so you can hang any of these onto a wall with a small picture hook.  All wall hung designs are equipped with hanging wire or a suitable mechanism for hanging.  Backlit pieces will have a power cord.  At present, these pieces are not designed to be hard-wired into home circuits.

They are dramatic and expressive, and would be elegant in your home, place of business, gallery, or place of worship.  I encourage and appreciate inquiries from interior designers.  I am pleased to collaborate with you to design commissioned work

Thank You for looking at my artwork!

About the Artwork

You may be curious about my Luminescent Sculpture technique and design process.  I usually start with a thumbnail sketch.  The item's foreseen use is considered, and then final dimensions are determined.  A cartoon of this is drawn onto a work table as a guide from which to work.

I then begin to decide about framework needed to support the sculpture and the lighting fixtures. I construct the framework, usually of wood, attach the lights, and begin to build the armature with reed, temporarily binder-clipping all joints.  When I'm satisfied with the shape and the integrity of the piece, I use a strong glue at all joints, reclipping them as I work.  After 24 hours I remove clips, make touchups, and trim.

Paper and sometimes silk are used to cover the armature.  It can take six layers of paper to acquire the balance between translucency and strength, with drying time allowed between each layer. When complete, an acrylic sealer is applied, hanging apparatus are attached,  the piece is signed , and

It is ready for your enjoyment.
